Hello, everyone. I am a student of Biblical Hebrew and am having trouble translating a passage from the Yalqut Shimoni. The Medieval Hebrew is different from what I am used to, and it seems to have a mixture of Aramaic in it.
I have figured about one third of it out.

The passage is:

looks like most ppl here are Jewish......

I'm not....:(

I'm a nursing student from Connecticut, hoping to graduate in 2 or 3 years. I have played World of Warcraft for 2 years and met a Jewish guy in game. He was our guild leader. Around 5 months ago, he went back to Israel and joined the air force there. He told me he always wanted to be a fighting pilot to serve his beloved country. He was born in New York and raised up in L.A.. He is an American citizen. This means it's his own decision wether he wana go to Israel or not.

A lot of ppl said Israel is dangerous, but he insisted. I just received his email 3 days ago. He told me he passed all the tests as well as the qualifications week. 900 ppl only 150 ppl passed. He was one of them!
I'm very pround of him and I'm amazed by his culture and his people.

I'm hoping after i graduate, I will go to Israel and be a nurse there. ( If they welcome foreigner......:shy:)

So.....I just started to learn Hebrew.....fortunately, Yale University has a Jewish coummunity offers some Hebrew lessons to public, I hope in 3 years, I can at least communicate with Jewish ppl in Hebrew....

Hi I listen to Hebrew radio quite a bit, and a lot of the presenters open a conversation with "Shalom l'kha" it sounds like.

I guess this is "hello to you?", but I only know "ata" and "at" for singular "you". If I am correct, in Hebrew is it:

I guess this is to a single person, and that to a group of people it would be Shalom l'khem?

Your help much appreciated!

Another thing I hear a lot, and cannot work out, is "shaleim" or something similar (it may be the end of a longer word) - I think it is something to do with politics, as it often appears with ממשלה (government).

Hi

Just found this forum on the Wikipedia site - great news!

Been learning for about a year now (using the FoundationStone course), but slow going - hopefully this forum will change all that. Struggling to build up my vocabulary really.

How did it start? Well, I visited Israel for work last summer, and got to meet up with a Jewish-born Christian who was saved as a student about 25 years ago at the local church I now attend - an amazing evening all round. Got to visit his Beth Ha'ke'heelah and listen to prayer and Bible study in Hebrew - a very special time still treasured by me and one I long to repeat.

I keep in touch with him, but he is so busy he doesn't have the time to answer my (many!) questions about Hebrew, so look out!

(Pleased to read that the previous post is written by a Christian too - Shalom Joan.)

I listen to Galei Tzahal radio as well in the hope of picking up pronunciation, but it's not really working just yet! I find their website quite helpful, as they talk about the news stories posted there in the bulletins.

Look forward to increasing my learning rate, and getting good enough to post in the Hebrew Only section!
